Mechanical Royalties

A type of music publishing revenue stream. The expression remains in use since the era of player pianos (due to their ability to reproduce music through “mechanical” means), representing a royalty dictated by copyright law and paid to a songwriter whenever his or her song is reproduced as part of a sound recording; whether on a physical format, in a download, or streamed.
